Four accused in police custody
Surat: Bharuch police on Tuesday arrested four persons conning people by promising to exchange US dollars at lower rates.
The gang had last week abducted and cheated a garments trader from Surat by offering to exchange Rs 1.7 lakh cash with the American currency at lower rate.
Police said that the accused Vinu alias Himmat Gohil, a resident of Bhavnagar, Valji Makwana, a resident of Botad, Hasmukh alias Hitesh Makwana and Akhtar Rataniya, both residents of Morbi, had abducted Umesh Kalsariya, who lives on Lambe Hanuman Road in Surat on July 3 and taken away his cash. Kalsariya approached Gohil through a relative as he wanted to exchange cash.

Surat: Surat city recorded 1,553 new Covid-19 cases on Tuesday. City witnessed highest Covid-19 deaths in the state when 24 patients succumbed on Tuesday.
Among the eight civic zones, Rander zone recorded highest daily infection with 251 cases, followed by 246 in Athwa zone. According to Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) officials, those who died of Covid-19 included a 44-year-old woman from Kosad village, a 45-year-old woman from Varachha, a 41-year-old woman from Lambe Hanuman Road, a 30-year-old man from Yogi Chowk in Varachha, a 42-year-old woman from Limbayat and a 41-year-old man from Udhna in the city.
Surat district recorded 375 new Covid-19 cases on Tuesday and one patient succumbed to the virus. Till now, Surat district has recorded 20423 cases and 309 patients died of the coronavirus.
Surat: The steady rise in new Covid-19 case as well as the casualties continued on Thursday as the Diamond city witnessed 1,551 new cases as compared to Wednesday’s 1,424. As per the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) s official data, 25 Covid-19 patients succumbed to the virus on Thursday.
Out of the 25 patients who died of Covid-19, nine were women with three of them below the 45-year-old category. A 32-year-old woman from Sarthana Jakatnaka, a 34-year-old woman from Lambe Hanuman Road in Varachha (A) zone, and a 43-year-old woman from Yogi Chowk of Varachha were among those who died on Thursday.
Out of the total eight civic zones, three Athwa, Rander and Katargam reported over 200 Covid-19 positive cases on Thursday. Rander, which crossed 10,000 positive-case mark on Thursday, and Athwa were the Covid-19 hotspots for the last few months.
