Lalashan in northern Taoyuan City, which ranges from 1,500-2,130 meters in altitude, had its first snowfall of the season at around 6 a.m., the city s tourism office said. The Lalashan Forest Reserve, home to over 120 Formosan cypresses trees estimated to be more than 500 years old, was also covered with snow. ....

A cold wave plunged south into Taiwan on Thursday (Jan. 7) sending temperatures in central Taiwan and all areas north down to 6 to 8 degrees Celsius. The cold temperatures combined with moist air provided the optimal conditions for snow on at least six mountains in northern, northeastern, and central Taiwan, including Yangmingshan, Taipingshan, Hehuanshan, Lalashan, Jianshishan, and Xueshan. ....

Huang Hsin-wei (黃信偉), one of the park s managers, said snow began falling around 6:40 p.m. at Cueifong Villa, 1,900 meters above sea level, in the Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area. Earlier in the day, weather expert Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) said the cold spell, coupled with heavy moisture, was likely to result in snowfalls at altitudes of over 2,000 meters in the northern half of Taiwan, including on Hehuanshan, Xueshan, Nanhushan, Taipingshan and Lalashan, from late Thursday into early Friday. ....
