Steelhead Streams in Western New York

DEC Region 9 offers steelhead anglers an abundance of opportunities from the mighty lower Niagara River to Cattaraugus Creek, one of the premier streams in the state, to other smaller streams. These streams offer high quality lake-run steelhead fishing from November through April. The majority of the steelhead in these streams are the result of smolt stockings by DEC. There is some natural reproduction of steelhead that adds to the fishery, particularly in the Cattaraugus Creek system. Studies are ongoing to evaluate the contribution of these wild fish to the angler catch. Projects are being planned and implemented to increase the contribution of wild steelhead. For detailed information on steelhead management, migratory runs, fishing tackle and techniques see the Steelhead Fishing in Lake Erie Tributaries and Lake Ontario Tributaries pages.
Steelhead Fishing in Lake Erie Tributaries
Lake Erie s tributary streams, both big and small, receive an annual run of migratory rainbow trout called steelhead. From October through April, thousands of steelhead ascend New York s Lake Erie tributaries on their mission to spawn. Excellent fishing opportunities await any angler who wishes to try their hand at steelhead fishing. Between the acrobatic leaps, long drag-screaming runs and rod quaking head shakes, the fight of an early run steelhead is a truly exhilarating experience. It is no wonder that this steelhead fishery draws anglers from across New York, surrounding states, and Canada.

Pennsylvania’s trout season will open earlier than usual this year, and statewide, on April 3.
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission on Monday set the opening date and also approved a single statewide Mentored Youth Trout Day on March 27.
As a result of the consolidation, separate regional mentored youth and opening days will not occur. Because mentored youth days were canceled last year, all Voluntary Youth Fishing Licenses purchased last season remain valid and will be honored during the 2021 season.
Officials said the changes will allow anglers to enjoy their recreational sport outdoors while addressing ongoing health concerns related to the covid-19 pandemic.
As part of a consolidated schedule made necessary by COVID-19, trout season will begin on April 3 this year. Mentored youth fishing will be held March 27.
