Jury trial to be held this week for Cadillac man charged with shooting at Lake County deputies


CADILLAC — Jury selection in the trial of Randy Lee Smith is slated to begin this Tuesday, with actual proceedings beginning as early as Tuesday afternoon.
Earlier this year, Smith pleaded not guilty to several felony charges related to an incident in 2019 involving a vehicular pursuit and gunshots fired at deputies.
Smith had previously been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to charges stemming from the same incident but in March, he withdrew those pleas after the Michigan Court of Appeals found “there was no adequate factual basis for the guilty pleas.”
Smith contends that he never shot at deputies and actually attempted multiple times to prevent his codefendant, Cody Haner, from doing so. ....

Cadillac man pleads not guilty to shooting at deputies in Lake County


BALDWIN — A Cadillac man recently pleaded not guilty to shooting at deputies from a moving vehicle in Lake County, among other charges.
On May 5, 36-year-old Randy Lee Smith was arraigned in Lake County Circuit Court on two counts of assault with intent to murder, one count of felon in possession of a firearm, one count of felon in possession of ammunition and one count of felony firearms.
Smith had previously been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to charges stemming from the same incident but in March, he withdrew those pleas after the Michigan Court of Appeals found “there was no adequate factual basis for the guilty pleas. ....

Judge rules charges can move forward against Cadillac man for allegedly shooting at deputies


BALDWIN — A judge on Friday ruled that several felony charges could move forward against a Cadillac man who withdrew guilty pleas earlier this year to shooting at deputies in Lake County.
Two counts of assault with intent to murder, one count of felon in possession of a firearm, one count of felon in possession of ammunition and one count of felony firearms were bound over to Lake County Circuit Court against 36-year-old Randy Lee Smith.
Lake County Prosecutor Craig Cooper said the only charge that wasn t bound over to circuit court was accessory after the fact.
In March, Smith withdrew guilty pleas of intentional discharge of a firearm from a motor vehicle and felony firearms possession after the Michigan Court of Appeals found “there was no adequate factual basis for the guilty pleas. ....

Cadillac man allowed to withdraw guilty plea, will have case retried


BALDWIN — A Cadillac man who had been serving seven to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty in connection with an incident involving a vehicular pursuit and shots being fired at deputies in Lake County was granted another day in court.
On Monday, March 8, Randy Lee Smith, 36, withdrew guilty pleas of intentional discharge of a firearm from a motor vehicle and felony firearms possession after the Michigan Court of Appeals found “there was no adequate factual basis for the guilty pleas.‘
