this is cnn breaking news. . i m victor blackwell, thank you for staying with us. we are of course covering the breaking news, this man hunt happening right now for the man who opened fire at a july 4th parade in highland park, illinois. he s described as armed and dangerous. at least six people are dead. more than two dozen have been taken to hospitals. now, a briefing a short time ago, police described this suspect. the suspect is currently described as a male, white, approximately 18 to 20 years old with longer black hair, a small build and wearing a white or blue t-shirt. a firearm has been recovered from the scene. it does appear he was shooting from a roof. the roof that he was shooting from, i don t have that information right now. we now know that the fbi is assisting in this investigation. and authorities are asking of course anyone with video to contact highland park police. we ve known the video in situations like this has been crucial. cnn s adrienne broad
parade in the city s downtown area came to a halt after multiple shots were fired. witnesses describe a horrific scene with terrified people running. some ran inside and others hid behind dumpsters and underneath cars. the gunfire started just 14 minutes after the parade began as the band was playing. pictures show multiple victims lying in the street with blood on them. here s how one witness described what they saw. a little after the band went through we heard pow, pow, pow. everybody thought it was fireworks or the military was going through with shotguns. i said something is wrong. i grabbed my dad and started running. i turned and saw a girl shot and i saw her die. i ve never seen anything like this. we were hiding behind the dumpster in about an hour. one man hiding with us had been shot in the head, he had bleeding all over his face. i m just happy that s all that happened. another girl was escorted out was shot in the leg. we went out to get our car keys and the st
chief breaking news correspondent trace gallagher joins us now from los angeles. trace, we covered so many of these shootings. what makes this one unique? you know, it s interesting. if you go back to the video you played there, that a big description of what happened here. police lost a little time there some of the people are reacting to the gun shots right away. a lot of other people that they questioned and talked to that were along the parade route thought they were fireworks. they stood there. they didn t move. that gave people a delay in how they approached this. the gun shots go off and you can see some people are still applauding. if you go down the entire parade line, you ll see video like this that we have seen throughout the day of people that are still sitting there because they think they re hearing fireworks, they think it s part of the show and they waited before they left. it s interesting to me that as you go forward in this investigation, they have the gu
