Preview: Oberstdorf 2021 begins with normal hill events including historic premiere

The first week of the Oberstdorf 2021 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships is in full swing and the first three Nordic Combined competitions on the HS 106 normal hill are approaching fast.
The men will begin with their Individual Gundersen event on Friday, while the Nordic Combined women will have their historic World Championship premiere on Saturday. The men’s Team Event is on schedule on Sunday and will conclude the normal hill events.

In the men’s event, it will be up to World Cup leader Jarl Magnus Riiber (NOR) to defend his Seefeld 2019 maiden title and he goes into the competition as the heavy favourite. Seefeld silver medallist Bernhard Gruber (AUT) will not be on start to defend his medal after his health scare and subsequent second heart surgery after the Lahti Ski Games but bronze medallist Akito Watabe (JPN) has made his aspirations for medals in Ober ....

The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf are on our doorsteps and from 24th February to 7th March, a total of five sets of gold, silver and bronze medals will be looking for new owners.
Five are one more than usual on the Nordic Combined programme during a World Championships and this is because finally the Nordic Combined women will make their highly-anticipated World Championship debut. After debuting on World Cup level in December, the women’s season has been woefully cut short due to Covid-19 pandemic-related cancellations and so the chance to shine on the big World Championship stage is twice as important for the continuous development of the discipline. ....

Police complaints over cross-country skiing clash

Aleksandr Bolshunov is the subject of two criminal reports filed with the Häme Police Department following an incident at the end of the men’s cross-country skiing relay race at the Lahti Ski Games on Sunday.
Bolshunov appeared to whip Finnish skier
Joni Mäki with his ski pole and then deliberately collided with Mäki after the pair had crossed the finish line.

Martti Hirvonen confirmed that two separate reports have been received over the incident.
Mäki held off a late challenge from Bolshunov to help Finland finish second in the relay race, but the Russian skier seemed aggrieved that Mäki blocked his line in the final straight. ....
