FEMA and the US Small Business Administration have approved more than $89.25 million in federal assistance to survivors of the Maui wildfires that began Aug. 8. The last day to register for Red Cross sheltering assistance is Friday, Sept. 15. The deadline to apply for FEMA assistance and a low-interest disaster loan from the U.S. Small Business Administration is Tuesday, Oct. 10. Residents who lost their job as a direct result of the Maui wildfires and live or work in Maui County have until Monday, Sept. 25, to apply for Disaster Unemployment Assistance. ....

Maui which is coming to grips with a tragedy that many say came out of nowhere. at least 55 people have been killed and the death toll is likely to keep increasing as emergency crews scour block after block of destroyed properties. and much of the historic town of lahaina business hub is no more. the wildfire now the second deadliest in the u.s. in a century. tens of thousands of people tourists and locals have been evac evacuated. one resident describes the terrifying moments of her escape. palm trees that were 40 feet up in the air and the flames hit it and the heat hit us in the face. maybe like 50 to 100 yards arrest, and so we just ran in this panic mode. let s stay together, let s stay together, but there was no time to wait for anybody. ....
