The strong cast of elite athletes from different countries and states in Nigeria have started arriving Lagos for the 2021 Access Bank Lagos city marathon slated for Saturday, April 10.
Now in its sixth edition, the Lagos Marathon usually attracts over 100,000 runners but the number has been reduced to just 300 runners for the 2021 edition.
The event has consistently been organised in February but due to COVID-19, it was moved to April by the organisers.
According to an official statement released by Olukayode Thomas, Head Communication and Media for the Lagos Marathon, over 95 percent of the elite runners have already arrived in Lagos while a few others are scheduled to jet in early today. ....

Muazu, Kefas Vows to End Dominance of East Africans

ACCESS LAGOS CITY MARATHON
Two of the country’s top elite road race runners, Adamu Muazu and Williams Kefas have assured Nigerians that it would no longer be business as usual for the East Africans; especially Kenyans at this year’s Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.
Unlike in the women’s category where a Nigerian has actually broken into the ranks to finish among the top 10, the men have watched helplessly as the Kenyans and Ethiopians cart away the thousands of dollars set as prize money for the fastest runners.
Iliya Pam in 2019 became the closest in breaking into the top 10 but his winning time of 2:32:24 in the Nigeria category was only good for 15th position overall. ....

Lagos City marathon moved to April 10

“On behalf of our Host City, Lagos, our lead Sponsor, Access Bank and other partners and sponsors, we sincerely apologize for having to postpone our race in 2021 because of the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic which has forced the cancellation or postponement of sporting events worldwide especially mass participation events like marathons and road races”.
According to Olopade, organizers of the Lagos Marathon were inundated with calls from Athletics Federations around the world as well as elite runners who wanted to qualify for the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games in Lagos.
He explained further that the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon has been approved as an Olympic Games qualifier by the International Olympics Committee (IOC) and the World Athletics. ....
