Sordid affairs, political backstabbing and brutal murders – there’s a reason the Tudors have occupied our collective conscious for centuries. A new offering from Channel 5 starring Jodie Turner-Smith as Anne Boleyn is the latest addition to the plethora of dramas about one of history’s most dramatic families – and it began last night.

The three-part drama, titled
Anne Boleyn and produced by historian Dan Jones, takes us through pivotal moments in the Tudor queen’s life, from the stillbirth of her son to her death by execution on 19 May 1536. The Tudor world is, as it might be expected, portrayed as a dark and difficult place to be a woman, with the plot following the final months of Anne’s marriage to Henry VIII as she struggles to conceive a male heir.
Jodie Turner-Smith will play Anne Boleyn in a colour-conscious casting decision. The new Channel 5 drama filmed in Yorkshire promises a progressive retelling of the tragic queen s story.

The story of King Henry VIII is pretty well known, but a new drama is putting an interesting angle on the age-old tale, and will focus on his marriage to Anne Boleyn from her perspective.
Anne Boleyn was Queen of England from 1533 to 1536 as wife of King Henry VIII, but (spoiler alert… if something that happened nearly 500 years ago needs a spoiler alert!) she was beheaded at the Tower of London in 1536 after being found guilty of adultery, incest and conspiracy against the King.
