Home loan commitments remain strong despite February fall: Australia

The number of owner occupier first home buyer loan commitments fell 3.3 per cent to 16,117 in February 2021 (seasonally adjusted). This is the first fall since May 2020, however, commitments remained at historically elevated levels. Compared to February 2020, the number of owner occupier first home buyer loan commitments rose by 65.8 per cent.
A 4.9 per cent fall in New South Wales and a 2.8 per cent fall in Queensland drove the fall in owner occupier housing loan commitments nationally. All other states with the exception of the Australian Capital Territory rose, with commitments in Victoria rising 4.2 per cent.
The value of new loan commitments for fixed term personal finance rose 1.1 per cent in February 2021 (seasonally adjusted), driven by lending for personal investment which rose 26.1 per cent. ....

Job vacancies continue to rise: Australia
Job vacancies in Australia increased by 14 per cent between November 2020 and February 2021, according to new seasonally adjusted figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
Bjorn Jarvis, head of Labour Statistics at the ABS, said job vacancies were 27 per cent higher than 12 months earlier in February 2020, just before the start of the pandemic.
“There were 289,000 job vacancies in February 2021, 61,000 more than a year earlier,” Mr Jarvis said.
“This reflected the pace of recovery in labour demand over the second half of 2020 and early 2021, and labour shortages in some industries.
“When we asked businesses experiencing labour shortages the reasons for this, more than usual noted difficulty in filling vacancies for lower paid jobs. ....

Analysis of deaths in Victoria through 2020 has shown there were 125 excess deaths recorded during the state’s second wave of COVID-19, according to data released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
Excess mortality refers to deaths that have exceeded expected numbers based on the pre-COVID-19 period.
Director of Mortality Statistics at the ABS, James Eynstone-Hinkins, said: “The data show that COVID-19 was the main contributor to excess deaths recorded in Victoria between 27 July and 23 August, with deaths from other diseases and conditions more in line with historical trends.”
In late March and early April, small numbers of excess deaths from respiratory conditions were recorded both nationally and in Victoria. However, from the end of May onwards, numbers of deaths from respiratory diseases have been significantly below expected counts. ....
