ANIMAL WATCH-The stern face of a Pit Bull adorns the Best Friends’ Animal Society’s Facebook announcement, “Together, We Made LA a No-Kill City,” but there is no mention of Los Angeles Animal Services nor General Manager Brenda Barnette as part of this accomplishment. Was this an oversight? Barnette is retiring as General Manager of LAAS after a decade of brutal attacks by Pit Bulls and other dogs with known-aggressive behavior on innocent and unsuspecting victims adopters, visitors, and employees at Los Angeles City animal shelters. These are dogs Barnette has made available for adoption, often with knowledge of their backgrounds and with written comments/warnings by shelter staff. ....

Animal Services GM Barnette Boasts LA Reached Best Friends ‘No Kill’ Goal, as Families Mourn COVID Deaths Details ANIMAL WATCH-On March 12, LA Animal Services GM Brenda Barnette callously and boastfully announced that Los Angeles has reached the Best Friends Animal Society “No Kill” goal for the city’s animal shelters due to efforts of “the city, LA Animal Services, a coalition of animal welfare organizations, compassionate leaders and a dedicated community.” At this same time, terrified humans all over Los Angeles clamor for vaccinations to save their own and loved ones’ lives from the deadliest disease outbreak in over a century, and many are paralyzed by the helplessness suffered from the sudden loss of one or more loved ones. ....
ANIMAL WATCH-During a brief lifting of COVID-19 restrictions in May 2020, a San Diego man took his Pit Bull to a San Diego-area park, where an aggressive coyote jumped a six-foot fence to attack the dog. They stared at each other stiffly for a few seconds and then the coyote became even more agitated and chased the large dog, attempting to bite him repeatedly as he ran to his owner. News10 broadcast an alarming video of the event which happened around 3 p.m. Coyotes are getting bolder during the virus pandemic, says Fox5, local residents claim it is not the first time this brazen coyote has chased dogs in the same park and that there have been numerous recent mid-day sightings of coyotes in residential neighborhoods. ....
LA West Valley Animal Shelter to Reopen, but Pets and Strays Need Appointments Details ANIMAL WATCH-On February 18, 2021, Los Angeles Animal Services General Manager Brenda Barnette (photo above) submitted a brief two-page letter to Councilman Paul Koretz and the City Council, abruptly revising her recent reconstitution proposal, Long Term Plan for the West Valley Animal Shelter, and reinstating the shelter s original purpose of serving and protecting the lost, abandoned and unwanted dogs, cats and other animals in West Valley communities. This was announced after months of GM Barnette s bully tactics to deprive the West Valley communities of a critical municipal animal shelter for which they pay taxes, and it would have left 40% (260 square miles) of the city of Los Angeles and over 1.77 million residents and their pets with only one animal shelter, the smaller East Valley Animal Shelter in Van Nuys. ....
