Police yesterday arrested a local Jubo League leader and his two associates over vandalising the sculpture of revolutionary freedom fighter Bagha Jatin at Kaya College in Kushtia s Kumarkhali upazila.
According to police, there was a rift between college Principal Harun-ur-Rashid and the president of its governing body, Nizamul Haque Chunnu, over several issues, including interference in college affairs by Nizamul and irregularities in a recent recruitment at the college.
Kushtia Superintendent of Police SM Tanvir Arafath said, A third party, willing to take over the presidency of the governing body, vandalised the bust of Bagha Jatin by taking advantage of the situation. ....

Police are questioning four people for their alleged negligence in protecting the sculpture of revolutionary freedom fighter Bagha Jatin.
They are, Advocate Nizamul Huq Chunnu, president of Kaya College Governing body, Harun ur Rashid, principal of the college, Anisur Rahman, member of the college governing body and Khalilur Rahman, night guard of the college, our local correspondent reports quoting Mojibur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kumarkhali police station.

The crime was committed at Kaya College in Kushtia on Thursday night.
Kaya College s governing body President Nizamul Huq Chunnu and member Anisur Rahman, Principal Harun ur Rashid, and night watchman Khalilur Rahman were detained for questioning.
Earlier, two madrasa students Abu Bakkar and Sabuj confessed in a court that they were influenced by radical anti-liberation Hefazat leaders Mamunul and Babunagari to vandalise Bangabandhu s sculpture on December 5. Madrasa teachers Al Amin and Yusuf Ali were arrested on December 6 on charge of helping the accused to escape. ....

A Kushtia court ordered two madrasa students accused of vandalising a sculpture of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to be sent to jail after recording their statements under section-164 yesterday evening.
Accused Abu Bakr Mithun, 18, and Nahid, 20, are students of Ibne Masud (R) Madrasa in Jugia area of Kushtia town.
A senior judicial magistrate recorded their statements after a Kushtia Model Police Station inspector placed the accused before the court around 4:00pm on completion of their five-day remand. ....
