State Highway 83 carved up so irrigation pipeline can be buried

A lane of State Highway 83 is closed between Kurow and the Waitaki Dam as diggers work on burying an irrigation pipeline.
A contentious pipeline construction, criticised for impacting the scenic Waitaki River valley landscape, should be out of sight by the end of 2021.
Work to hide the $45 million pipeline by burying it below State Highway 83 began in April and is on schedule to meet new resource consent conditions of completion by September 15, according to the Waitaki District Council.
The construction issue flared in August 2019 when the council issued the Kurow-Duntroon Irrigation Company with an abatement notice because of a consents breach and in September 2019 about 50 residents met to discuss their concerns about the sight of the pipeline, claiming it should be below the ridge of the highway. ....

Work to move a section of the Kurow-Duntroon Irrigation Company pipeline underground will begin in April.
The company was issued an abatement notice by the Waitaki District Council in August last year, after criticism the pipe spoiled the State Highway 83 scenery and blocking the view breached the company s consent.
However, it was later cancelled and a new notice was issued directing the company to reach project milestones by September this year. ....

Fifteen years of seeing to the future irrigation needs of Kurow and Duntroon have come to an end for Geoff Keeling.
He has stepped down from his role as chairman of the Kurow-Duntroon Irrigation Company, and said the company was in a good position to face the future.
It s in a great position. It s got a modern scheme that always has teething issues when things are first built, but it will see the next generation or two of farmers in this district through, at least the next couple of generations, and it s allowed us to hopefully comply with the ongoing regulations it ll leave us best placed, Keeling said. ....
