KMT councillor paid for Chinese intel: prosecutors

Taipei prosecutors found that Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Taipei City Councilor Chin Huei-chu (秦慧珠) had allegedly paid NT$80 million (US$2.69 million at the current exchange rate) for information from Chinese informants, while investigating Chin’s fraud lawsuit against socialite Lin Yuan-chun (林爰君), better known as JoJo Lin.
Prosecutors on Tuesday dropped all charges against Lin, who was named along with two other people as defendants, saying that they could not substantiate the fraud allegations.
Lin was reportedly unable to speak after going through a major illness.
Banking records and other evidence showed that Chin and her assistants had from 2007 to 2016 transferred a ....

Skater's Chinese uniform continues to cause ruckus

Controversy over Taiwanese speedskater Huang Yu-ting (黃郁婷) wearing the China national team’s skinsuit continued as Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Hsu Chih-chieh (許智傑) yesterday said that Huang lacked awareness of her role as the flagbearer of the Taiwanese team at the Beijing Winter Olympics’ opening ceremony last night.
Huang, one of the four athletes competing for Taiwan at this year’s Winter Olympics, faced a backlash on social media on Thursday after posting a training video of her wearing a Chinese national team skinsuit.
Hsu yesterday said that Huang’s choice of uniform was extremely inappropriate, given that she is Taiwan’s flagbearer and that the ....

Taipei too passive in promoting pet adoption program, councilor says

A Taipei program allowing pet owners to post their pet for adoption a month before taking them to a shelter has resulted in an adoption rate of less than 9 percent, independent Taipei City Councilor Lin Ying-meng (林穎孟) said on Monday last week, blaming the poor performance on a lack of effort by the city.
The “pet transfer” program, launched in 2018, allows an owner who is no longer able to care for their pet to first apply for a listing through the Taipei Animal Shelter.
If after 30 days a new owner does not come forward, the owner can take the ....
