25,000 turn out for last Kumbh shahi snan | India News


HARIDWAR: Amidst the massive surge in Covid-19 cases, the last shahi snan of the Maha Kumbh on the ocassion of Chaitra Purnima on Tuesday was a relatively muted affair compared to the previous shahi snans.
In the morning, when the shahi snan ritual started, it was being estimated that the turnout would be around 3 lakh. Officials announced by evening that around 25,000 people had participated in the shahi snan till 5 pm.

Even 3 lakh or even 25,000 is too large a number of people congregating at the height of a deadly epidemic. With mounting deaths all around, especially in the past fortnight, the state government should have ensured that the last shahi snan was a symbolic event. Now one can only hope that this doesn’t turn out to be a superspreader event. ....

Kumbh Mela: Seers keep last Shahi Snan symbolic affair amid Covid surge


The last shahi snan at the Kumbh Mela in Haridwar on Tuesday was a subdued affair with seers keeping the ritual symbolic in view of a nationwide surge in COVID-19 cases.
Till 10:45 am, around 670 seers took the royal bath and some more are expected to take it in the day at Har ki Pairi on the banks of the Ganga, officials said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 17 had appealed to sadhus to observe the remaining duration of the Kumbh only in a symbolic manner. Following this different akhadas (sects) had agreed to keep their participation symbolic.
Crowds at the ghats of the Ganga started thinning down drastically since last week after the key akhadas of seers began pulling out of the Maha Kumbh, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, citing the spike in coronavirus case numbers. ....

Haridwar (Uttarakhand) [India], April 25 (ANI): Dev Dolis (people carrying local deities) on Sunday morning took a holy dip in the Ganga river at Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar amid the ongoing Kumbh Mela.
The Dev Doli ritual of bathing local deities in Ganga was scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday evening at 4 pm, a worship prayer was held at Triveni ghat in Rishikesh. After the ritual, everybody was escorted by the Kumbh Mela police to Prem Nagar Ashram in Haridwar.
The Dev Dolis carried local deities on their shoulders to the Ganga river. ....

COVID-19: Telangana health dept asks Kumbh returnees to isolate for 14 days

Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], April 24 (ANI): Amid the rise in Covid-19 cases in Telangana, the state health department has urged people returning from the Kumbh Mela in Uttarakhand to isolate for 14 days. 
It has also asked people showing COVID-19 symptoms to get tested immediately or call the state emergency 104 healthcare number for assistance. 
Over 2,000 people have tested positive for the coronavirus at the Kumbh festival in Haridwar so far.
The COVID-19 protocols including wearing of masks and social distancing were openly violated as lakhs gathered for the major Hindu pilgrimage. ....

Sixty-five healthcare personnel, including doctors, deployed on Kumbh duty have tested positive for COVID-19, officials said here on Friday. All of them have been kept in isolation, they said.
