MARSHALL Southwest Minnesota State University alumna Deeann J. Griebel has made a commitment that will provide $1.8 million for the Student Success and Advising Center and scholarships at the institution.
According to a SMSU release, Griebel’s investment will allow for the creation of new tutoring and mentoring programs to ensure all students have the support they need to become successful graduates.
The release said Griebel has been a supporter of SMSU over the years and has made significant contributions to scholarships and capital projects. SMSU plans to recognize her commitment by renaming the Student Success and Advising Center to the Deeann Griebel Student Success Center. ....

MARSHALL, Minn. (KEYC) Southwest Minnesota State University announced Tuesday it has received a commitment of nearly $2 million from a former student.
The $1.8 million donation for the Student Success and Advising Center and scholarships was made by Deeann J. Griebel, who earned an accounting degree from SMSU in 1980.
The investment from the Pipestone, Minn., native will allow for the creation of new tutoring and mentoring programs that will aim to ensure that all students have the resources and support they need to be successful. ....

Southwest Minnesota State University Professor of History Dr. Jeff Kolnick is the first recipient of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award.
MARSHALL Southwest Minnesota State University Professor of History Dr. Jeff Kolnick, a tireless advocate of inclusion, equity and underrepresented populations, is the first recipient of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award.
The award is presented by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. He will be honored during the virtual MLK Day program on Monday.
Kolnick has been teaching at SMSU since 1992 and is known internationally for his work with the Fannie Lou Hamer National Institute on Citizenship and Democracy. It is named for Mrs. Fannie Lou Hamer, a Mississippi civil rights leader who was instrumental in forming the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party in the 1964.
