Share The organised labour in Ekiti state has rejected the decision of the State government to suspend the payment of consequential adjustment of the new minimum wage to workers in the state. The unions also frowned at the government’s plans to review subventions to higher institutions, which they said would further worsen the economic life of the workers. The state governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi had two weeks ago at a stakeholder meeting on the finance of the state said payment of the consequential adjustment for senior workers would be suspended and subventions to institutions review due to dwindling financial fortune of the state.

But the labour unions disagreed with the sack of the workers and had asked the leadership of the Ekiti State House Assembly to recall the 21 sacked workers, a request that has not been acceded to . On Wednesday, the unions gave notice to Speaker, Funminiyi Afuye, indicating their readiness to embark on statewide strike in seven days if the workers were not recalled.

ADVERTISEMENT The Organised Labour in Ekiti State has issued a seven-day strike notice to the state Assembly over alleged irregular disengagement of some of its staff. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the notice, which was handed over to the Speaker, Funminiyi Afuye, on Wednesday, threatened to involve all workers in the state. In the notice, Labour asked the Speaker to cause the immediate reinstatement of 21 workers of the Assembly, allegedly disengaged by the House of Assembly Service Commission (HASC), early in the year.

The organised labour in Ekiti State has given the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon Funminiyi Afuye a 7-day ultimatum to reinstate 21 workers that were allegedly sacked by the House of Assembly service commission. The labour union threatened that workers would commence an indefinite strike from March 10, 2021, if the Assembly defy the directive. The workers were in January 2021 shoved out of the system over alleged illegal recruitment into the service by the immediate past administration. The letter dated 3rd March 2021 and made available to journalists on Wednesday, was signed by the Secretaries of Nigerian Labour Congress, Com Akinyemi Eunice, Secretary, Trade Union Congress, Com Kuloogun Lawrence, and the Joint Negotiating Council, Com. Gbenga Olowoyo.
