Surfing contests on Oahu’s South Shore, where Olympian Duke Kahanamoku and his fellow Waikiki beachboys put the sport on the map, dropped off heavily during the early part of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The city is seeking public input to determine the next location for a Waikiki public surfboard storage site, which has been closed since the fall of 2021 when a two-alarm fire wiped out a Kuhio Beach Park location for the second time in less than two years.
“We’ve been putting up with for too long the kind of vagrants that really, quite honestly are people who have criminal records and think they have a right to be there."
The city Department of Parks and Recreation is making plans to extend Kuhio Beach Park’s daily closure by an extra two hours a move that will broaden the park’s shutdown from midnight to 5 a.m.
