KU Academic Council allows two-year degree program at affiliated colleges

The Academic Council of the University of Karachi on Thursday unanimously approved the continuation of its conventional degree programs, and formed a committee for the phase-wise implementation of the two-year associate degree program and four-year BS program proposed by the Higher Education Commission.
The members of the KU Academic Council also decided to defer the two-year associate degree program till June 2022. The Academic Council met at the Arts Auditorium, with Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi in the chair.
The decision of the restoration of the traditional bachelor’s and master’s programs was taken in light of the recommendations of the committee, which was headed by Prof Dr Jamil H. Kazmi. ....

Has Sindh govt taken a U-turn on its two-year degree policy?

The Government of Sindh has made a U-turn on their prior decision to continue the two-year degree programmes abolished by the Higher Education Commission (HEC).
Last year the HEC had asked Pakistan’s educational institutions to discontinue the two-year bachelor’s degree programmes, saying that they would not recognise any such programmes undertaken after the academic year 2018. They, however, allowed those who had gotten admissions before 2018 to complete their degrees.

Addressing a news conference with civil society members on February 3, the chief minister’s adviser on universities & boards, Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, responded by saying that any HEC proposal to introduce a four-year degree programme was tantamount to attacking provincial autonomy. ....

Degree colleges of Karachi in limbo as KU yet to announce policy on two-year programmes

More than 80 state-run colleges affiliated with the University of Karachi (KU) have not announced admissions to their degree programmes for the academic year 2021 due to a decision taken by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC) in November last year, which fully enforced the associate degree programme introduced in 2011.
The KU is yet to announce its policy on whether or not its affiliated colleges should offer admissions to the traditional two-year degree programme that has been nullified by the HEC or the two-year associate degree programme sanctioned by the commission.
Owing to this uncertainty, the fate of thousands of students is hanging in the balance. Neither are the colleges offering admissions to the HEC-sanctioned associate programme nor are they able continue with the traditional BA and BSc or four-year BS. ....
