Five Bunong indigenous people were summoned by Mondulkiri provincial police to testify on May 3 about a minor criminal complaint filed by a citizen who claimed the accused had built illegal structures on private property.
The summons issued on April 30 identified the five as Roeung Heng, Nel Rith, Kwan Tai, Khvev Sreab and Ming Vikleuy, all residing in Poulong village in Sen Monorom town’s Romnea commune. ....

Environmental activist Kroeung Tola plans to appeal the Mondulkiri Provincial Court decision ordering him to pay 40 million riel ($10,000) in compensation to O’Raing district governor Siek Mony and four million riel to the state for public defamation.
The provincial court’s January 19 decision came after Mony sued Tola over a Facebook post that said the former was involved with attempts to encroach on 300ha of protected forest in O’Raing district.
Tola, who is of Bunong ethnicity according to the court’s records, claimed he had received information from residents in the area that Mony was involved in the clearing of the 300ha and that he had conspired with other officials. ....

The Ministry of Environment on December 28 issued a report detailing crackdowns on illegal activities in protected natural areas and biodiversity conservation corridors.
According to the report, forest rangers responded to 8,917 cases of natural resource crimes over the past 12 months, an increase of 3,442 cases, or 63 per cent, over last year’s 5,475 reported incidents.
Rangers had logged 27,588 patrols for the year, up from 24,048 the previous year, but the number of cases sent to courts for prosecution had declined from 631 to 605. ....
