Kovels Antiques: St. Patrick's Day memorabilia began to show up after 1900

King Features Syndicate
St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated each year on March 17 in the United States, but collectors found few postcards, greeting cards or objects to collect before 1900. The first St. Patrick’s Day parade is said to have taken place in 1601 in St. Augustine, Florida. But a major event is the New York City parade, which started in 1762.
St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was born in Roman Britain and kidnapped in the late fourth century, when he was 14 years old. He was taken to Ireland as a slave, but he escaped in 431 A.D. and converted the Irish to Christianity. Parties, dances, drinking and celebrations started about 1600, and the observance has grown into an important celebration not only in Ireland but also in the U.S. ....

Kovels Antiques: Certain wood can help identify where chairs came from

Terry and Kim Kovel
King Features Syndicate
Furniture made in America during its early days sometimes used expensive imported material such as mahogany with hardware from Europe. But local woods, such as pine, oak, walnut and cedar, iron and even paint were available and inexpensive. The use of a local wood helps identify furniture made in New Mexico, Louisiana and parts of Pennsylvania.
An early 19th-century ladderback chair from Louisiana was sold at a recent Neal auction. It was made of cypress wood, which is rot-resistant, hard and durable, has few knots, a light golden color, and, best of all, found near the furniture maker. The chair could also be dated from the shape of the stiles, rungs and its corn husk seat. Modern copies of this type of chair to be used outdoors are made of cypress because it lasts longer than other woods. ....

Kovels: Company that started as metal fabricators used scraps to make toys

By Terry and Kim Kovel
King Features Syndicate
The Arcade Manufacturing Company started as Novelty Iron Works in 1868. It made iron storefronts, windmills and coffee mills. It became Arcade Manufacturing Company in 1885, and the first product was a cork puller. In 1893, they started to make toys to make use of the scrap metal. Animal banks were made after 1908, and child-sized coffee grinders were made from the start until the 1930s.
In 1921, the company decided to make toys that were copies of real vehicles and everyday items. The first of the toys was an accurate copy of the car used by Yellow Cab. By the 1930s, it was making copies of many other vehicles. The toys were well-made, expensive and popular with children. When World War II started in 1941, it switched to war work, making special iron parts. After the war in 1946, the company was bought. It closed in 1953. ....

Kovels: An antique carriage might be just the gift for a New Year's baby

By Terry and Kim Kovel
King Features Syndicate
The New Year is celebrated in many ways, but in the United States, there are always midnight celebrations with pictures of an old man representing the past and a baby, the new year. The other popular symbol is a clock of almost any style with the hands at midnight.
The early Greek idea of Baby New Year was a baby paraded around in a basket to welcome the new year. Then it became pictures of the Baby Jesus or a Baby New Year. But pictures were created for publications, and each year from 1907 to 1943, Joseph Leyendecker drew a different, humorous illustration of a Baby New Year for the Saturday Evening Post that have influenced all that followed. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was searching for the missing Baby New Year in a cartoon in the 1970s. Modern celebrations give gifts to the first newborn baby of the year at hospitals. We think the 19th-century baby buggy would be a nice gift for this year s first bor ....
