(AP) Some Native American tribes in the Pacific Northwest are criticizing the suggestion they have competing opinions on how best to save endangered salmon runs, saying tribes are united in pursuing the removal of four hydroelectric dams on the Snake River in order to preserve the iconic fish. A dozen tribes issued a joint press release on Wednesday rejecting the notion that tribes based near Puget Sound might have differing goals than inland tribes. “Any efforts to divide the indigenous peoples of this region by suggesting that the Puget Sound Tribes don’t have the same interests as the Northwest Inland Tribes have been soundly rejected by tribal leaders,” Nez Perce Tribe Chairman Samuel Penney said in the release. “We are all salmon people.” ....

Jermain Charlo vanished in June 2018. The Confederated Salish and Kootenai tribal member hasn’t been seen since. Valenda Morigeau, Charlo’s aunt, reported her missing to the Missoula Police Department in the days after her disappearance. But Morigeau said the detective initially assigned to the case failed to take the report seriously and was slow to act, a pattern she said is common when Native Americans report missing loved ones. “You would think that there would be more urgency to go find the person that is missing,” Morigeau said. “Here we are, three years later, because they assumed she was avoiding responsibilities.” ....

ROB CHANEY The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency adopted a new standard for selenium waste in Montanaâs Kootenai River and Koocanusa Reservoir on Thursday, after the Legislature dropped plans to revoke the state rule. âEPAâs action is based on a thorough technical review of the Stateâs submission and a determination that the adopted standards are based on sound science and consistent with the Clean Water Act,â EPA spokeswoman Laura Flynn Jenkins wrote in an emailed statement. âMontanaâs revised standards will strengthen ongoing efforts to address selenium concerns in surface waters, fish and aquatic life within the Kootenai River watershed.â ....
