Civic organisation Komani Protest Action (KPA), which has been critical of the Enoch Mgijima local municipality’s service delivery failures and is pushing for its dissolution, is taking the battle to the polls. Fed-up with the status quo, the organisation is preparing to contest the May 29 provincial election.
From facing R1.2bn Eskom debt to the slow progress of national government intervention, 2023 has been a roller-coaster ride for the cash-strapped Enoch Mgijima municipality. The Komani-based local authority tried every trick in the book to cut costs in an attempt to service its debt with the power utility, including moves to sidestep a salary hike for its employees.
