For Kohima, the capital city that was placed among the dirtiest urban settlements, as per the nationwide urban cleanliness survey Swachh Survekshan in 2020 as well as gained notoriety for theft of beautification items like flower pots placed on roadside, winning the Real Play Challenge 2022 is a consolation and a big turnaround that will boost its image. KMC bans open burning of waste - Eastern Mirror

Dimapur, Nov. 21 (EMN): The Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) has reiterated that open burning of waste even during mass social work, including at landfill sites, is completely prohibited. Administrator, KMC, T Lanusenla Longkumer, in a notification reminded that open burning of waste on lands, including at landfill sites, is completely prohibited under Solid Waste Management Rules 2016, Plastic Waste Management Rules 2016 and the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The notification also stated that the KMC is in the process of mitigating the KMC landfill (dump yard) of the existing deep-seated fire, which poses serious health risks to all citizens of Kohima and surrounding areas. In view of this, disposal of waste has been shifted to an adjacent location in the same site. “And whereas, it has come to the notice of the undersigned that time and again manpower attached to sanitation vehicles of wards/areas/villages/organisations are found to be setting fire to the new landfill,” it stated. ....

Kohima wins Real Play Challenge 2022 under 'Places where play heals people'

Dimapur, Nov. 19 (EMN): Kohima won Real Play Challenge 2022 under ‘Places where play heals people’ category from among 94 entries received across 41 countries on Friday, for creating caregiver and children-friendly public spaces. Real Play Challenge 2022 is a global challenge that encourages cities to adopt playful placemaking to respond to critical urban issues and awards inspiring cities and urban practitioners that successfully create such spaces. Besides Kohima, two other Indian cities — Warrangal and Indore — also won the challenge under ‘Places where play unites us all’ and ‘Places where play supports climate action’ categories respectively, making it the first time for Indian cities to win in three categories, according to an update from World Resources Institute (WRI) India. Wall painting in Kohima highlights child rights

Our CorrespondentKohima, Nov. 14 (EMN): In an attempt to create awareness on child rights on the occasion of Children’s Day, the office of CHILDLINE Kohima, and District Child Protection Unit, inaugurated a child-friendly wall painting beneath the pedestrian flyover at box cutting, Kohima. Administrator of Kohima Municipal Council (KMC), T Lanusenla Longkumer inaugurated the wall painting in the presence of staff of CHILDLINE Kohima and DCPU, Kohima. Centre coordinator CHILDLINE Kohima, Neingu Kulnu said the main objective of the wall painting was to create awareness on child rights and CHILDLINE Number 1098. She said they chose wall paintings to mark Children’s Day this year because children like creativity and arts.
