In the works for a year, UFV's new art journal officially launches its first issue at creatiValley celebration

CreatiValley, the Reach Gallery Museumâs nine-day celebration of local culture, proved that Abbotsford is fertile ground for the arts. Concerts, improv and stand-up, art battles, and panel discussions were among the festivities of the exhibition â one highlight being a 12-hour marathon of exhibitions, events, and performances by UFV fine arts students on Friday, October 2. One of these events was the launch of PIPE
magazine, UFVâs new journal from students in the visual arts department. The Cascade
spoke with Terrill Smith, PIPEâs managing editor and cofounder, to talk about the launch and the future of the magazine.

Abbotsford MP and UFV philosophy professor weigh in on pros and cons of proposed Anti-terrorism Act

Bill C-51, the proposed Anti-terrorism Act, has been criticized by its opponents as unconstitutional since it was first introduced and read at the House of Commons on January 30.
The Conservative Party of Canada calls the bill an extension of existing legislation like the Combatting Terrorism Act and the Nuclear Terrorism Act, and is a step towards better countering terrorist threats.
However, the bill is criticized for its use of the phrase “terrorism in general,” which opponents argue is too vague, therefore allowing for a possibly unfair interpretation of what is deemed terrorist activity.

I’d never been to the Venue before. It seemed like an odd place, in paper, for Swans to play. I thought they’d surely play at a “seedier” place than a nightclub on Granville (I don’t mean that as derogatory; seedy venues are brilliant in their own right). The dark atmosphere inside, however, suited the sounds to come.

Since many students will be voting for the first time, what would you describe as the role of municipal politics? What can city councillors actually do?
The role of the council member is to advise the mayor and to work with the community to improve the community. They send in an agenda as to what they’re going to do, it’s printed every week and it allows citizens to get in touch with council members. A lot of it is just zoning bylaws and such, but there are some important things, too. If the community doesn’t know about these things, they get through without public conversation. That’s a scary thing. ....

If advance votes are anything to base initial assumptions upon, this election might just see an upswing in voter turnout. By Elections Canada’s count, by Thanksgiving, about 3.6 million people have cast their ballots about 71 per cent more than in 2011.
This kind of statistic forecasts that voter turnout is on the rise. I feel safe assuming that this is tied, in some part, to the focus on apathy and engagement that this election period has seen.
Campaigns for engagement are more visible than ever. Media attention to the issue is admirable. And criticism on the low youth voter turnout and the sentiment to change are validated and bolstered when personalities like Rick Mercer and Justin Trudeau speak on the issue. ....
