Close on the heels of a High Court directive on the appointment of a key official in the human resources wing of Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) and the mounting losses being incurred by the metro, individual employees and those under the banner of Kochi Metro Employees’ Union (KMEU) have sought higher level of accountability in the agency’s functioning.
There have been allegations of nepotism in many appointments made by the metro agency. The public must not view the agency which set many examples in terms of professionalism and excellence, in a different perspective, said an office bearer of the union. Members of the interview board must come clear on such appointments, especially since agencies that supply manpower are often under a cloud. Kochi-1 card crosses one-lakh milestone

The open-loop National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) smart card named Kochi-1, launched jointly by Kochi Metro Rail Limited and Axis Bank and claimed to be the first of its kind in India, crossed the one-lakh milestone on Saturday.
About 30% of the cards were issued to women commuters. The metro agency had, as part of this year’s International Women’s Day, launched an offer on Kochi-1 card by waiving off issuance and recharge fees for women and students. Nearly 800 students and 3,825 women commuters availed the offer.
Kochi-1 card is a co-branded prepaid card issued at metro stations and Axis Bank branches in Kochi and has wide acceptance in transit and retail touchpoints in the city. The cards can also be used in the soon-to-be-launched Water Metro ferries, avoiding the need to have multiple travel cards. It is also accepted in over 200 private buses. ....

Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) is in the process of finalising the fare structure of 23 ferries that will be introduced this month as part of the ₹747-crore Water Metro project, with the Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode (IIM-K) conducting a comprehensive survey and submitting a report.
The metro agency’s finance wing is reviewing the report, following which the Managing Director will take a call on the fare structure and forward it to the State government for approval. The fare would most likely be similar to that charged by Vega-120, the State Water Transport Department’s partly-AC fast ferry that operated in the Vaikom-Ernakulam-Fort Kochi sector, said official sources. ....

The first board meeting of the Kochi Metropolitan Transport Authority (KMTA), a body mandated with integrating different commuting modes and improving the quality of roads and allied infrastructure, is scheduled to be held on January 22.
