and i was. 50 years later, i am enjoying but the greatest adventure ever , happened replayed, and doing it as nasa s chief historian. what a ride. host: how did you get to this position? what do you do u.s. chief historian? guest: the quick answers do not do what i did if you want to be chief historian. i did at 22 year career in the air force and did a lot of , graduate work on the history of the soviet space program. when i retired from the air force, the then chief historian said why not apply for a job here at nasa? i applied, got the job, and so, ended up being the chief historian. because i was the right guy right place at the right time. host: when you look at at the history of space explorer racing, what is this anniversary mark? guest: i think it is a real watershed. there are several. the first human in space. but the first time that humans set foot on another planetary body, that is a big step. it is akin to the columbus setting foot in the new world. and 500 years
spinning off like particles, but having an unfortunately galvanizing force for economic and political and social instability in many more parts of the world. thank you. [applause] thank you very much, professor shelley. we now from the carnegie endowment, they have a central subject of the book is the role of corruption, how corruption is an enabler, facilitator, and you cannot really understand transnational crime without paying attention to the broader issue of corruption. you have been studying corruption in detail in india and elsewhere. what are your reactions to some of those points that professor shelley raises? sure. thanks, everyone, for coming. i first want to thank moises for asking me to comment on this wonderful book, you know? the book is about terrorism, organized crime of which i know nothing about, and only under generous definition do i know anything about corruption, so thank you for including me. i want to make a couple of poi
reason. the real reason in my opinion is nixon was trying to get whatever evidence the government had of his own wrongdoing. one of the aids told him there was a report on the bombing that was in the hands of prominent democrats who were working at the brooking institute and the washington think tank. nixon is furious and orders a break in the brooking institution in order to get the report. that is on tape. it is the only break-in we know that he ordered for sure because he ordered it on tape several times. in order to get this accomplished, he put together the special investigation unit and a former fbi agent and cia agent and people wondered about the cover-up because as far as we know he didn t order that. if he had not ordered a cover-up, a full investigation on the crimes would lead back to the break-in that nixon did order and that would lead back to the shell defense and sabotage the 1968 campaign. so people say about watergate it isn t the crime but the cover up but
