Vietnamese rice exports break price record 15:52 | 09/03/2021 Vietnamese rice exporters are seeing buoyant prospects this year According to statistics published by the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), the Vietnamese rice fetches is $513-517 per tonne of 5 per cent broken rice, $488-492 per tonne of 25 per cent of broken rice. Jasmine rice costs $513-567 per tonne. In general, the price of Vietnamese rice is $5-7 per tonne higher than products from Thailand ($508-512 per tonne for 5 per cent-broken rice) and much higher than rice from India and Pakistan. The price of 5 per cent-broken rice is forecast to remain over $500 per tonne by the end of the winter-spring crop of 2020-2021. ....

At present, the UK applies an import tax of 17.4 per cent for jasmine rice. Vietnam is exempt from this thanks to the UK-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (UKVFTA), improving the competitive capacity of Vietnamese products compared to other countries, like Thailand. Vietnamese Commercial Counsellor in the UK Nguyen Canh Cuong said that along with Long Dan, numerous other enterprises will also import Vietnamese rice under the UKVFTA. ....

However, whether the penalty will be enforced or not remains in doubt. The secretariat of the House of Representatives recently rejected a request by Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction Plc (Stecon) to extend the construction period of the 23-billion-baht parliament complex for a fifth time, from January to May, after the company failed to finish the project by the deadline set on Dec 31. Following the decision, Stecon is now subject to a fine of 12.3 million baht per day, until construction is complete. ....
