why officers failed to enter the school while the attacker was still firing. those shots audible from the outside. here s what we do know at 11:8 a.m. central time, the suspect crashed into a ditch near the school. there is a picture there. he exited the vehicle and fired at two witnesses across the street. at 11:40 a.m., he entered through the west side of the building. there is the video there. two minutes later a teacher sent a text message saying there was an active shooter at the school. it was not until 11:43 that school officials announced they were under lockdown, one minute later, officers entered the school, were shot and and retreated as they called for further forces to join them. it was not until 12 n. 44, one hower later, a tactical team of border patrol uvalde police department made entry and finally shot the suspect. there are several questions, hard questions. understandable ones that have yet to be answered. this morning, inside the classroom with these chil
uvalde, texas, community. there s no details here about the police response at robb elementary. police called and waited for back-up and tactical teams. those teams didn t arrive until an hour later. we re now hearing from the shooter s family. our correspondent spoke to the gunman s grandfather about the tragedy. [speaking foreign language the shooter s grandfather sending blessings to the family and facts. he also criticized the gun laws that allowed his grandson at 18 to get a gun. we re also hearing from survivors, including the lengths one little girl went to. she had a friend next to her that she was pretty sure was already dead and laying on the ground bleeding out. she put her hands in her friend s blood and then smeared it, she said, all over her body. she wanted to look like she was dead. she was scared the gunman was going to come back through that adjoining door back to the classroom and she wanted to be able to play dead.
vigils are underway in uvalde, texas for the 19 children and 2 teachers gunned down inside robb elementary school by an 18-year-old high school drop-out. memorials outside the school from the community not far from the border with mexico. a friend of the gunman says he had a history of fighting as we see here in video obtained by cnn. texas authorities report he had no criminal record, no history of mental illness. more now on the investigation from cnn s ed. i m going to shoot an elementary school. that was one of the chilling text messages the uvalde gunman sent to a 15-year-old girl in germany at 11:21 central time in texas just 15 minutes before the shooting at robb elementary school. evil swept across uvalde yesterday. the 18-year-old gunman drove to the elementary school where he would kill 19 children and the faculty members 2 days before they were heading out for school break. the gunman wrote messages that foreshadowed the carnage he was about to inflict.
overnight, the cross. one for each of the 19 children and two teachers who died here. this was the digital community last night. everyone came together. you can see the pain and the tears, which really does feel like a small town, 15,000 people. it s hard to find anyone that does not have a direct connection to one of the victims. she was 10-years-old. she want wanted go to disney world. maria bravo is remembered for a young girl who put a smile on everyone s face. we are telling their stories this morning. a 4th grade teacher who sacrificed herself trying to protect the children. a grieving father who find out his daughter died trying to save her classmates. we told yesterday then of the bodies were turned over to the families of the funeral homs. the rest will be turned over this morning so that the families can make arrangements. we do have if you details about how the mass shooting up f unfolded. the 18-year-old was on school grounds for up to an hour. moments before
two blocks away, life looks as it normally does. but something terrible did happen here. this community, this small community lost 21 of its people right here at this school, everything has changed forever, this will never be a normal spot again. this school, this town, becomes yet another name on a list that no one wants to be on. tonight, a vigil here in uvalde, texas is underway, it s paying tribute to yesterday s victims we will have much more throughout the show tonight, about the victims, the people who lost their lives. 19 children, and two teachers at robb elementary, we re still learning the identity of some of the children who were killed. they were eight, nine, ten years old. all of them in the same fourth grade classroom, murdered with their teachers. let me bring you up to speed with what we know at this point about how this massacre unfolded, as well as some of the things that we don t yet now. this is the series of events laid out for us by texas law enforcemen
