Hurricane as it nears puerto rico churning toward the u.s. this weekend. our meteorologist has the latest from the weather center. good morning, dave and christine. tropical storm dorian here a very compact storm that will be impacting portions of st. lucia, martinique and on approach towards areas around puerto rico and hispaniola. because it s a compact system, any interaction whether it be with a small island or larger one plays a role of what is left of this storm and it s eventual impact to be farther down the line. we do have tropical storm watches in place from puerto rico towards the u.s. virgin islands, st. kitts and also further towards the south we do have tropical storm warnings in place with winds approaching 45 to 65 miles per hour, but of course stronger gusts over the next couple days. that brief window in place over the next 36 hours for this to potentially get up to a category 1, beyond that larger islands that could disrupt the flow of ....
Guadalupe, st. kitts and puerto rico, dangerously close to puerto rico and the verirgin islands. the other final thing is this is irma and this is the path of maria. look how close. the virgin islands could almost get hit by both of those. the devastation there has already been done and then the misery on top of it with another storm is unimaginable. jose is still a hurricane but looks like a nor easter. that s how it s going to act, minus the ice and snow. rain story along long island and cape cod. it does a little loop here and misses any direct impact. long island and cape cod, still a storm watch. any significant impact, gusty winds, minor power outages in long island and southern portions of massachusetts. compared to what maria will do in puerto rico and the virgin islands, jose is a glancing blow and nuisance in a couple of days. gusty winds and occasional rain over the next couple of days. i would not expect any major ....
110-mile-per-hour winds. almost a major category 3. and it could get higher than that by the time it gets to puerto rico and virgin islands. it s 85 miles east of martinique. we have hurricane warnings for the island i just mentioned. in st. kitts. hurricane watches for puerto rico. could it miss? it s not going to miss both puerto rico and the virgin islands. the red line is the hurricane center forecast path. you can see the model are also towards the virgin islands. we have about 48 hours to figure out exactly who is going to get hit the worst in this area. we showed you the pictures. those were devastated. especially the british virgin islands and the u.s. virgin islands from irma with british virgin islands going right through the core of the eye. the other big storm out there, this one is right along the southeast coastline and now off the outer banks of north carolina and those clouds are spreading to the north. this is an inconvenient storm compared to what maria is going ....
Of course, the power of those volunteers. so, what is the greatest need at this point? it is always helped by the american people, so people can actually text the word irma, the name of the storm, to 9099 and volunteers can visit redcross.org. we always need the support of the american public. how many volunteers do you have working in florida at this point, can you tell us? yes, of course. we had 560 on the ground and just about 400 on the way. at this point, close to 1,000 voss dedicated to this operation. while, again, we re responding to the gulf and we have a team actually from south florida in st. kitts and puerto rico providing support as well. we haven t spoken much in the last couple of hours about what happened in the caribbean prior to getting to florida. we saw the first pictures out of cuba where there appeared to be massive flooding. we know there was a tremendous barbuda ....
An aircraft blew through it and found higher winds than that. we haven t seen that since. that was a one-time fly by they found between 188 and 192 where they were flying, 7,000 feet high. that was enough to upgrade it to a category 5. i don t see significant restrengthening or strengthening. there is the eye. if the eye gets down to ten or 15 miles per hour or 15 miles wide, that s when the storm will increase again. when she pulls her arms in, she goes faster. angular momentum. there s the eye, there s the storm. there are the islands in the way, from the british virgin islands to the u.s. virgin islands and st. kitts and the like. if it s left or right, it could be in the cone. if it is in the middle, the storm will be a strong category 4 when it approaches the florida ....
