Following the black boxes of 2020, it’s important to understand that adding Black faces to our Instagram feeds, interacting with Black creators across disciplines, and patronizing Black businesses are the ways to support the global Black community in ways that aren’t performative. Social media can play a key role in that support, as establishing a following is an essential tool in building community, helping a creator reach new audiences, and potentially connecting them with opportunities they wouldn’t otherwise have garnered.
The number of Black chefs around the country comes in at just under 15%, so there’s still work to do when it comes to representation, and pressing “follow” on Instagram or Twitter can thus go a long way in inching us closer over time.
