Shale Drillers Show Restraint in Q1

(Bloomberg) So far, shale explorers are passing the test. The industry, much maligned by investors for excessive spending without returns to show for it, has managed to resist a 22% run-up in oil prices during the first three months of this year, holding output almost flat. A round-up of data on the drillers shows expectations for record free cash flow and signs that the industry is starting to pay its way. There are also indications of a delicate balance between workers finally returning to the fields, while drilling ramps up at a more moderate pace. “We emerge from earnings season with continued confidence in a disciplined response from covered E&Ps to higher commodity prices,” Goldman Sachs Group Inc. analysts including Neil Mehta wrote Monday in a note to investors. While one quarter of discipline may not be sufficient for explorers to prove their commitment to moderation, there are at least signs that they’re finally heeding investors’ pleas for austerity, the analy

California to install 1 7GW of battery storage in 2021 to boost grid supply

5 April 2021 In an effort to stave off a repeat of 2020s summer blackouts, California is planning to install 1.7GW worth of new battery storage by August, according to new figures published this week by BloombergNEF, more capacity than China is expected to install. Bloomberg Green citing new BloombergNEF numbers revealed that the leading power analysts expect California to not only install 1.7GW worth of new battery storage in 2021, but another 1.4GW in 2022 followed by 1.2GW in 2023. But this will need to be only the start of a decades’ long push to ramp up energy storage deployment across the state. A report published in March by three California agencies that regulate energy and climate issues – California’s Air Resources Board, Energy Commission, and Public Utilities Commission – concluded that 48.8GW worth of battery storage will be necessary by 2045 to achieve the state’s plan to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions.

California s electricity grid solution? Plug in really big batteries

California’s electricity grid solution? Plug in really big batteries It will be the biggest test yet of whether batteries are reliable enough to sustain a grid largely powered by renewables 04 April 2021 - 06:00 David R Baker Picture: 123RF/SAIDIN B JUSHO San Francisco With summer’s heat approaching, California’s plan for avoiding a repeat of last year’s blackouts hinges on a humble saviour: the battery. Giant versions of the same technology that powers smartphones and cars are being plugged into the state’s electrical grid at breakneck speed, with California set to add more battery capacity this year than all of China, according to BloombergNEF.

To Avoid Blackouts, California s Installing More Big Batteries Than All of China

California to Test Whether Big Batteries Can Stop Summer Blackouts Bloomberg 3 days ago David R Baker (Bloomberg) With summer’s heat approaching, California’s plan for avoiding a repeat of last year’s blackouts hinges on a humble savior – the battery. It will be the biggest test yet of whether batteries are reliable enough to sustain a grid largely powered by renewables. Last year, when the worst heat wave in a generation taxed California’s power system and plunged millions into darkness in the first rolling blackouts since the Enron crisis, many blamed the state’s aggressive clean-energy push and its reliance on solar power. Should a heat wave strike again this summer, it will be
