日本初の絵入り百科事典「訓蒙図彙［きんもうずい］」は教育目的で生まれた。天文［てんぶん］、地理、人物、動植物、道具など森羅万象１４００項目超の語彙の絵解きはたちまち評判になり、子ども向けだった書物がやがて貴人や外国人にも読まれるようになった。
国際日本文化研究センター（日文研、京都市）の石上阿希特任助教（藤枝市出身）が研究成果を「江戸のことば絵事典」（角川選書）にまとめた。抄出された項目には麒麟［きりん］や鳳凰［ほうおう］など実在しないものもある。将軍に寄進された記録はあるが実物を見た人は少なかった象も取り上げている。
