Labor has conceded to the Nationals in the NSW Upper Hunter byelection.
“Earlier this morning, I phoned David Layzell to congratulate him on his election as the next member for Upper Hunter,” ALP candidate Jeff Drayton said in statement.
“Obviously, David and I don’t agree on many things but we both have the best interests of the Upper Hunter at heart. I wish David and his family all the best as he starts this new role.”
The Nationals were on track to hold the seat for the NSW coalition, defying expectations of a swing against the government in the crucial byelection. ....

Labor concedes defeat to the Nationals in NSW Upper Hunter by-election

Labor has conceded to the Nationals in the NSW Upper Hunter by-election.
ALP candidate Jeff Drayton says he phoned his Nationals rival David Layzell on Sunday morning to congratulate him on his election as the next member for Upper Hunter.
Mr Layzell had claimed around 30 per cent of the first preferences from nearly 40,000 votes counted at midday on Sunday.
Mr Drayton was next on 22 per cent, with the One Nation and Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party candidates following on 12 per cent.

The Upper Hunter by-election was a “disastrous result” for Labor and “good news” for Scott Morrison, says Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison “wants to win three federal Labor seats in the Hunter region in an environment of a Labor energy policy split”.
“On these numbers Joel Fitzgibbon would lose his seat of Hunter,” Mr Clennell said.
The Nationals appear on track to retain the Upper Hunter seat they ve held for 90 years in a crucial by-election that threatened the Berejiklian government s majority in NSW.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian joined the campaign trail in an eleventh hour bid to save the seat. ....

Barnaby Joyce criticises Malcolm Turnbull for supporting independent candidate in byelection

Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce has criticised his former colleague Malcolm Turnbull's support of Upper Hunter Independent candidate Kirsty O'Connell.

The former prime minister and his wife each donated $3,000 to the independent candidate running in today's byelection, who supports a moratorium on coal.

Mr Joyce expressed his anger saying "Malcolm has turned into the most bitter ghost of the lot".

"You're actually out there Malcolm, campaigning against the people who made you the prime minister of Australia," he said.

"Can't you see there's just something not quite right about that? Some inkling of a sense of duty, that would say to you, why would I do that?"

Mr Turnbull didn't stand alongside his preferred candidate today.
