Kina community comes together to celebrate the beginning of a new chapter

In 2013, 140 families raised money to help the Tasman District Council buy the reserve, after owners Carter Holt Harvey attempted to subdivide it, despite a 1982 covenant from its original owner Lewis Baigent governing its use as a public space.
“It’s a lovely place, and semi wild, unlike a lot of reserves,” Short said.

The Kina community is proud of their reserve, which is a public space after 140 families fund raised for its purchase in 2013.
A couple of years ago, the reserve’s quiet location made it a target for vandals. There were burnouts, and tables were pulled from their foundations and burned, along with a tree. ....
