Schools reopening without robust COVID-19 mitigation risks accelerating pandemic

Queen Mary University of London Lead author Dr Deepti Gurdasani from Queen Mary University of London said: “It’s important to acknowledge the key role schools play in transmission of SARS-CoV-2, and make them safer so as to protect the wellbeing of children, staff, families, and the wider community.” In the letter, the authors write: “While returning to school as soon as possible is imperative for the education, social development, and mental and physical welfare of children, not enough has been done to make schools safer for students and staff. “Without additional mitigations, increases in transmission are likely, this time with more infectious and possibly more virulent variants, resulting in further lockdowns, school closures, and absenteeism.”

Emergency, child care and food workers become eligible For COVID-19 Vaccine -

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – More than half a million people in San Diego County have become eligible to receive their COVID-19 vaccines, including people who work in emergency services, child care and education, food and agriculture and grocery stores. San Diego County officials announced last week that the vaccines were available for those groups, but also admitted it could take weeks to get a shot to everyone who wants one. “We need folks to be patient,” Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said Wednesday, adding that the county will prioritize K-12 schools in ZIP codes hardest hit by COVID-19. Previously, only health care personnel, long-term care facility staff and residents and those who are 65 years and older were eligible for vaccines.
