i didn t attempt to take someone else but followed people up to that point and said no. reporter: the seven-year-old he admits to kidnapping says to be the easiest target. he followed the mother and her girl home. her mother was upset. i was upset. i wanted her to know i have a seven-year-old son myself. i can only imagine how reporter: in a sometimes emotional jailhouse interview, douglas calls the kidnapping a cry for help, claiming people from the government have been following him for years, and told him to do it. i said i don t know why i m supposed to take you. i just know that i am for some reason or other. these people want to see this happen. i don t know why. i said but why don t we both try to calm down first and then we ll talk about it more in a minute. reporter: douglas says he had no intention in harming the seven-year-old and was as scared as she was. when i picked her up, she said she was scared. i said i m scared, too. we were both shaking.
