GREEN BAY - A resolution expressing confidence in how Green Bay ran the 2020 elections revealed deep divisions on the City Council Tuesday as officials contend with allegations that the city mismanaged the process. The City Council voted 6-1, with five members abstaining, to pass the measure which states that the August and November elections were properly executed in an accurate, safe, and secure manner. The move came as critics fueled by articles on conservative websites have blasted the city s use of grant funds and private consultants to facilitate voting during the coronavirus pandemic. A group of residents filed a complaint with the Wisconsin Elections Commission last month claiming that the Center for Tech and Civic Life illegally dictated how Green Bay ran its election when it provided the city with $1.6 million in grants. Republican lawmakers also have zeroed in on the city as they seek to rewrite the state s voting laws. ....
GREEN BAY - City officials had all-hands on deck as they managed last year s elections but didn t do anything to distort the integrity of the process, according to a new report from the city attorney. Attorney Vanessa Chavez reviewed the August and November elections amid allegations from Republican lawmakers that Green Bay s use of grant money and private consultants tainted the process. Former City Clerk Kris Teske resigned in December after clashing for months with the mayor s office, which she accused of taking over election planning. A group of Green Bay residents filed a complaint to the Wisconsin Elections Commission earlier this month claiming that the Center for Tech and Civic Life illegally dictated how Green Bay ran its election when it provided the city with $1.6 million to facilitate voting during the coronavirus pandemic. The nonprofit distributed grants to over 200 municipalities across Wisconsin. ....

A little over a month ago, Chavez told the city council she would be releasing a report in response to questions about the integrity of the election from conservatives, including Republican state lawmakers. In the report, Chavez recommits to the city’s stance that it did nothing wrong when it conducted the election, including the use of a $1.6 million private grant from the Center for Tech and Civic Life. She concludes the report by saying, “No allegations of fraud have been made with respect to the City’s conduct of the November 3, 2020 election, and no issues affecting the integrity of the election have been found.” ....
