COVID-19 in Iowa: Ames superintendent reflects on a school year full of unknowns

All students in the Ames school district could fully return to in-person learning by second semester if local conditions allow.
The first back likely would be elementary learners, Superintendent Jenny Risner said. Those learners could potentially move to a fully onsite model following the district s winter break, with families still having the ability to stay in a remote, fully online option.
I m hoping we can get them in it when we return on Jan. 4, but that s local conditions pending, Risner said. If we continue that trend that we see right now where we re stable and we re going down, we should be able to return our elementary learners, and then we re really going to be looking at interventions for second semester with elementary students. ....

Iowa agriculture: Story City shrimp farm receives statewide recognition

Story City s newest seafood company, Midland Co., has been awarded a statewide small business of the month award from America’s Small Business Development Center Iowa.
The business, which is located in Story City s old factory outlet mall and occupies 20,000 square feet, uses sustainable, environmentally friendly methods to raise shrimp in the Midwest.
Owner Jackson Kimle participated in ISU s Agricultural Entrepreneurship Initiative and ISU Startup Factory programs, according to the release. America s SBDC Iowa is a program between Iowa State University’s Ivy College of Business and the Office of Economic Development and Industry Relations.
Jackson has been working with the SBDC center at Iowa State University since June of 2019 when they were interested in applying for funding from the Wellmark Community Venture Capital Fund, the release states. An additional 38 cases were confirmed in Story County in 24 hours, the state s coronavirus website reported at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
At the time, state officials reported 7,499 positive cases in Story County, which is an increase of 38 cases from Tuesday s total of 7,461.
To date, a total of 23 Story County residents have died as a result of COVID-19, according to Iowa s coronavirus website. No additional deaths were reported from Tuesday to Wednesday morning.
After the state adopted a new way of calculating the number of people who died from COVID-19 on the evening of Dec. 7, Story County s pandemic death toll dropped from 25 on Dec. 7 to 18 on Dec. 8. ....

Allison Moses was running a COVID-19 unit at the beginning of the year at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines.
When the first COVID patient arrived at the hospital, Moses, a Huxley resident, volunteered to have her unit become the primary COVID unit at the hospital.
We had a patient suspected a couple weeks earlier in March and it went really, really well and smooth, so we decided to put them on our (cardiopulmonary) unit, Moses said. Thirty-five new COVID-19 cases were reported at Iowa State University last week, according to the university s COVID-19 dashboard update.
On Monday, the university began its five-week winter session. Iowa State s spring semester will officially begin Jan. 25, four days after the winter session ends, according to information from ISU s registrar office.
According to university statistics, from Dec. 7 to Dec. 13, a total of 35 individuals from the university tested positive for the virus. The totals include results from asymptomatic testing offered to students prior to winter break.
That total includes 23 students, five staff members, and one faculty member through on-campus testing, as well as one student, four staff members and one faculty member via off-campus sources. ....
