Readers react to rising Covid case rate in Swindon

Swindon Borough Council has warned about the town’s rising Covid case rate. In a post on social media, the authority said Swindon needs to ‘shift the car out of reverse’ in order to follow the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown. The seven-day rolling average for the town has increased to 115.7 per 100,000 from 91 per 100,000 last Friday. This is much higher than the south west average of 68.4 per 100,000. Boris Johnson’s roadmap out of the third national lockdown was revealed on Monday and begins with the reopening of schools on March 8. The Prime Minister hopes to remove all social restrictions and reopen the country fully on June 21.

WHAT YOU SAID: Council asks Government for ban on loud fireworks

The borough council’s cabinet member for public safety wrote a letter to the Government asking for a law to be put in place to limit the noise of fireworks. Cathy Martyn sent the letter to the minister for small business, consumers, and labour markets Paul Scully after colleagues lent their support. She cited the Animal Welfare 2006, saying it was illegal to cause unnecessary suffering to animals. She explained that loud fireworks used by the public caused misery for people as well as pets. Coun Martyn said the council does not want to ban fireworks and says volunteer-run community displays provide a useful source of funding – but it asks for the law to be changed to make 90 decibels the loudest firework available to the public.
