A Vermont church has found itself with an unusual and enviable responsibility: giving away well over half a million dollars.

“There’s a buzz about it,” said Rev. Andy Nagy-Benson, the pastor at the Middlebury Congregational Church. “It feels like a once in a lifetime moment.”
The church has received two separate chunks of money, totaling $650,000, Nagy-Benson said. He told NECN it was all donated by a woman overseas with close ties to the community and church.
With additional funding up to five businesses will receive $20,000 cash grants
Vermont Business Magazine The Better Middlebury Partnership (BMP) announced today that as a result of generous donations from two community organizations, Kick Start Middlebury has doubled the size of the grants offered in its business recruitment effort, from $10,000 to $20,000 in start-up cash. Now with a total of $110,000 cash at its disposal, plus services donated by area businesses, the Kick Start Middlebury program is poised to change the town’s business and retail landscape.
The increase comes after a donation from Table 21, a non-profit founded by the Congregational Church of Middlebury (UCC). After the church received a generous charitable gift earlier this year, Rev. Entrepreneurs could get $10,000 to open a business in Middlebury, Vermont, through a new program that aims to fill vacant storefronts downtown.

Phelps has been imagining what new businesses would be a good fit for the college town, such as a juice bar, clothing boutique or a family restaurant.

Vermont Business Magazine The Kick Start Middlebury program, created by a partnership of property owners and government, economic development, educational and business entities, is now accepting Letters of Interest to establish, relocate or expand a business in Middlebury. At least two applicants will receive an incentive package that includes free or discounted services and products donated by area businesses, a $10,000 grant made available by the Town of Middlebury’s business development fund, and various benefits offered by property owners.
