Kiani Conley-Wilson Empowers Their Community to Remake the Food System

If there’s one thing the pandemic has brought to light, it’s the rampant inequalities that exist across our food systems. One in four households experienced food insecurity in 2020, and food pantries and mutual aid networks have struggled to keep up with demand. The question of who can eat, and eat well, and who can’t has never been more urgent.
Soul Fire Farm in Petersburg, New York, which is dedicated to “equity in access to land, sustenance, and power in the food system,” is working to fix those inequalities. With an eye toward Indigenous and Black rights, its food sovereignty programs help feed and teach more than 10,000 people a year, whether by providing raised garden beds to city dwellers, delivering free “solidarity shares” of produce to local residents, or working on land-return initiatives for northeast farmers. Kiani Conley-Wilson announces campaign for Troy City Council District 5

TROY, N.Y. â Kiani Conley-Wilson, 25, a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a Bachelor of Science in Sustainability Studies and Troy community organizer, recently announced on social media her intention to run for the Troy City Council District 5 seat.
She will seek both the Democratic and Working Families Party nominations, challenging incumbent Democrat Ken Zalewski. Due to the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, she will host her first virtual campaign event, a listening session with Troy residents and neighbors on Zoom, Friday, Feb. 5.
Born and raised in the Boston area, Conley-Wilson is a community organizer and food justice gardener. Conley-Wilson works for Soul Fire Farm, a community farm dedicated to dismantling racism in the food system while providing services for those in need and training the next generation of food justice leaders. TROY – The race for the City Council’s 5th District seat sees a progressive grassroots campaign developing by an urban farmer who also co-chairs the Troy Democratic Socialists of America.
Kiani Conley-Wilson, 25, who moved to Troy from Massachusetts to study at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, is seeking the Democratic and Working Families Party endorsements.
“I have a lot of involvement in the community,” said Conley-Wilson. “I’m a Democratic Socialist. I believe in providing resources for people in need.”
