First we continue our life stories season, with celebrating life at 117 welcome to my great grandmothers 117th birthday. Right now, she is taking pictures of people who have come to see her and celebrate this big day with her. There is more than 90 years difference between me and her. Shes 117 and i am just 23. I am priscilla ngethe. I am returning to my ancestral home in kenya to celebrate a remarkable birthday of one of the oldest people in the world. My great grandmother, elizabeth koinange. I am here to discover the secrets of her long life, as she throws a party and reunites five generations of my family. This is kiambu, where i was born. Its about ten miles from nairobi, the capital of kenya. This fertile land has been home to the kikuyu tribe and to my family, the koinanges, for at least six generations. I happened to catch out of the corner of my eye this little girl. Karen was ten years old, by herself, going up and down the hillside of this dump looking and foraging for things. She was looking for food and also looking for, i believe, aluminum and Plastic Products to recycle for money for food. This is something that she does every day. Karens parents abandoned her years ago so shes being raised by her grandmother and grandfather who she calls daddy. Hes clearly very sick and when she thinks about the possibility of losing him, she is terrified. We can make a difference helping those children. We make a difference, but sometimes the people can see the need. I see the need every time that im going there. And its really important when those children give you a hug and they tell you thank you for everything you do, they thank you and god bless you because you are providing food for me and for my family.
