COPPER HARBOR, MICH. The first thing Ranger Chris Amidon wants you to know about Isle Royale National Park? It’s a destination that demands your time.
The park’s location way out in Lake Superior, roughly 55 miles from the tip of Michigan’s remote Keweenaw Peninsula, has made this archipelago and its eponymous main island one of the least-visited properties in the entire National Park System. Getting there requires time, being there requires time, and even trip planning a must for this place can and should take time, too, ideally well before you visit.

It s already a great spot for stargazing, and the lodge s location also allows people to view the northern lights.
The mountain lodge will now be a stargazer s dream because it s in the process of becoming an International Dark Sky Park. In order to receive this title, the International Dark-Sky Association must designate the land as such, and this isn t an easy task.
According to the International Dark-Sky Association s website, a dark sky park is a land possessing an exceptional or distinguished quality of starry nights and a nocturnal environment that is specifically protected for its scientific, natural, educational, cultural heritage, and/or public enjoyment.

CALUMET The Calumet Area Trails (CAT) Group finalized its concept plan for the trail system, and has announced a scheduled presentation for later this month.
The group’s vision has to form a system of trails, routes and pathways that connect parks, other trails and trail networks and Calumet area communities.
“The CAT will enhance the quality of life and sense of place for residents and visitors,” states the group’s website, “by providing a way to explore the area’s cultural, natural, and recreational resources. The trail system will foster health and safety, strengthen community ties and local businesses, and support restoration and conservation efforts in this beautiful, nationally significant landscape.”
