The U.S. Army on Monday released more information about Duke Webb s service record. Webb, 37, is making his first court appearance Monday on charges of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. Police say Webb opened fire, seemingly at random, before 7 p.m. Saturday at Don Carter Lanes on East State Street. Three people were killed and three others were wounded. ....
Dog rescued from Rockford fire; house condemned ROCKFORD Firefighters rescued a dog from a house fire Thursday at Liberty Drive and Rockwell Street on the city s northwest side. The fire started around 12:45 p.m. Thursday and was under control about an hour later, the Rockford Fire Department said via Twitter. No one was home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported. Firefighters were alerted to the house fire by a passerby. The home is now condemned after the fire caused about $35,000 in damages, the Fire Department said. The cause has not been determined and the fire remains under investigation. ....
Rockford police investigate fatal shooting on 11th Street ROCKFORD Police are investigating a fatal shooting in the 1900 block of 11th Street. A 29-year-old man was fatally shot at the BP gas station at 1909 11th St. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The shooting happened before 11:30 a Monday, marking the city s 36th homicide in what was already the deadliest year in Rockford s history. The highest number of homicides on record this year surpassed the previous high of 31 in 1996. ....
MACHESNEY PARK GiGi S Playhouse Rockford hosted a drive-thru toy giveaway Saturday to spread some Christmas cheer after its annual Holidays and Heroes event was called off as a safety precaution amid the pandemic. The Playhouse, which serves about 375 individuals with Down syndrome, gave out $100 gift cards to Meijer for 30 families who won a drawing. Rockford police officers were also on hand to distribute treat bags and books donated by local author Steve Cotone. “We are trying to spread some Christmas cheer to Playhouse families with a little help from our friends at Meijer and the Rockford Police Department,” Playhouse Executive Director Karen Carlson said in a news release. “For the past few years, Meijer has generously contributed thousands of dollars to allow about 30 participants from the Playhouse to shop with a police officer for our ‘Holidays and Heroes’ event. ....
