On Sunday afternoon Dr. Kenneth Guerra and his twin brother Kevin Guerra were laid to eternal rest in their much-loved hometown of Benque Viejo del Carmen in the faithful presence of family members and friends. Kevin Guerra passed away shortly after midday on Saturday and his brother, Kenneth, lost his struggle to Covid-19 complications eighteen hours later on Sunday morning.
Kevin was intubated at the K.H.M.H. on Saturday. At that time, Kenneth was also intubated and was in dire need of plasma from a person who had recently recovered from COVID-19.
A brief funeral service was held less than 24 hours after the pair of twin doctors from Benque Viejo del Carmen had passed away. They were taken by Coye’s Funeral Home on Sunday in matching coffins to their resting place, from the Sacred Heart Church in San Ignacio to Benque Viejo.

The coronavirus pandemic has snatched away the lives of two doctors who were fighting to keep others healthy during the pandemic.
Twin brothers Dr Kevin and Dr Kenneth Guerra, died one day apart from each other.
The Ministry of Health and Wellness says the brothers are Belize’s first healthcare workers to have lost their lives to complications due to COVID-19.
Dr Kevin Guerra died on December 12. He worked at the Independence Polyclinic under the Ministry of Health and Wellness for five years. Dr Kenneth Guerra also lost the fight to COVID-19 on December 13. Dr Kenneth worked at the San Ignacio Community Hospital under the Ministry of Health and Wellness for three years.
It was a drama that played out in real-time. The kind you couldn t turn your eyes or your heart away from, even if you d tried. Young, vibrant and jovial twin doctors contracting and dying from Covid, the second before the first was even cold.
There have been almost 200 deaths from Covid since March, and while each was its own private tragedy, some have played out publicly on the national stage - and registered on an emotional Richter scale from ripple to shockwave.
And this weekend felt like the ground beneath all our feet gave way when the Gurerra brothers died.
