D[b]etained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, has filed an application before the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking to be transferred from the custody of the Department of State Service, DSS, to the Nigerian Correctional Service Centre in Kuje.[/b] Kanu, in the application he filed through his team of lawyers led by Mr Ifeanyi Ejiofor, decried that he has been denied access to his medical doctors. He said he might die in the custody of the DSS if nothing was done to urgently address his deteriorating health condition. He specifically applied for an order of the trial court[b], “directing the transfer of the Applicant from the custody of the National Headquarters of the State Security Service to the Nigerian Correctional Service Centre in Kuje, Abuja, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, where he was initially detained before he was granted bail, pending the determination of the charge”. ....
Kanu has been in DSS custody since he was extradited to the country. The Federal Government had refused to disclose the location of Kanu’s arrest but Kingsley Kanu, his brother, had said his brother was arrested in Kenya. But the Director-General of Kenyan Immigration Services, Alexander Muteshi, denied knowledge of Kanu’s arrest. However, on Thursday, Ejiofor gave an update of his encounter with Kanu. “My Client – Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, was actually abducted by the accursed Kenya’s Special Police Force on the 18th of June 2021 at their International Airport and consequently taken to an undisclosed residence under dehumanizing conditions. ....
Advertisement Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation (AGF), had announced the arrest and extradition of the IPOB leader, which he said was achieved “through the collaborative efforts of Nigerian intelligence and security services”. Malami did not state where Kanu was brought from to Nigeria, but Kingsley Kanu, brother of the separatist leader, had alleged that his brother was apprehended in Kenya. On Friday, Wilfred Machage, Kenyan high commissioner to Nigeria, denied the claim that Kanu was arrested in his country. However, speaking through his lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Kanu said his heart is now in a worse condition due to the torture and dehumanising conditions he was subjected to by the Kenyans. “My client - Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, was actually abducted by the accursed Kenya s Special Police Force on the 18th of June 2021 at their International Airport, and consequently taken to an undisclosed residence under dehumanising conditions. “He was tortured and subjected to all forms of inhuman treatment which worsened his health condition. He was illegally detained for eight good days in Kenya before being transferred to their Nigerian counterpart, Ejiofor says. ....
