BUFFALO, N.Y. Islanders goalie Ilya Sorokin’s eyes lit up and he broke into a big smile in not needing an interpretation when asked his favourite memory of his first NHL win and a shutout, no less.
“Video review,” the Russian-born goalie said. “Cancelled it.”
There was more to Sorokin’s 20-save performance in the Islanders’ 3-0 victory over the Buffalo Sabres than an overturned goal on Tuesday night. But the 25-year-old rookie understood how big of a save he got from coach Barry Trotz in having Victor Olofsson’s power-play goal negated with 6:59 remaining. ....

Workhorse Islanders defenseman Ken Jonsson called it an awesome feeling.

The Islanders Army was ready for the fireworks. It was playoff time, April 2002.
Then again so were the Toronto Maple Leafs, headed by coach Pat Quinn who opened the verbal duel with a We re the underdogs because we ve got so many injuries.
It was a weak curtain-raiser which was quickly squelched by Lavvy who shot right back at Quinn, Nice try! ....

Canadian Gold: Remembering the 1994 World Junior Championship

The tournament
A repeat after winning gold in 1993 may have seemed unlikely at the time considering Canada had only won back-to-back world junior titles just once in the tournament s history.
The odds seemed to be stacked against this group, too. Canada had five eligible returnees unavailable for the tournament because the NHL came calling: Paul Kariya, Chris Pronger, Chris Gratton, Alexandre Daigle, and Rob Niedermayer. This tournament was a true test of the nation s depth.

Wider margins of victory were ideal against lesser opponents considering goal differential was used as the tiebreaker in this tournament - it s how Canada previously won in 1985 despite sharing an identical 5-0-2 record with Czechoslovakia. ....
