Kansas government offices to resume in-person operations next month


State offices will resume normal operations starting next month, Gov. Laura Kelly s administration announced Wednesday, citing the widespread availability of the COVID-19 vaccine.
While some state government facilities have reopened, most state offices in and around Topeka have remained largely closed since the pandemic began last year.
But a memo from Secretary of Administration DeAngela Burns-Wallace to state agency leaders noted all state employees will have had the opportunity to get vaccinated by the end of May, making reopening more feasible. Normal operations are set to resume on June 13.

When Kansas gets its share of Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion stimulus package, one Ellis County legislator hopes some money will help the state’s hard-hit unemployment fund.
Sen. Rick Billinger, R-40th Senate District, said that before the pandemic, Kansas had close to $1 billion in the fund. 
But more than $600 million in fraudulent claims, plus huge numbers of Kansans with legitimate claims, have taken a toll, he said Saturday during a virtual legislative coffee.
“That’s not state money, that’s employers’ money. That’s their fund,” Billinger said. “I’m hopeful that we will be able to help some there.” ....

What is meat? Ranchers, companies in Kansas debate


Brad Rayl thinks people know what meat is and what it is not.
But for Rayl, a cattle rancher in Buhler, things are a bit complicated. Rayl is also on the board of a vegetable protein manufacturing company in Hutchinson  Kansas Protein Foods.
While he feels people already can recognize the difference between animal meat and plant-based meat, he also thinks it makes sense for manufacturers of products that do not contain animal products to clarify what they are actually selling. 
You ought to have a nutritional label and report to people what it is, Rayl said. For those who don t want that (meat) in their diet, it s a good alternative. ....
