New traffic signal online in Lampasas County


A new traffic signal in Lampasas County is officially up and running, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.
The signal is in place at the intersection of U.S. Highway 190 and Farm-to-Market Road 2808, just outside of Kempner.
Currently, the signal is flashing yellow for traffic on Highway 190 and flashing red for traffic on FM 2808. The signal is programmed for full operation beginning Thursday.
“Message boards are being used at each end of US 190 to advise motorists of the new signal,” the TxDOT release said. ....

Candidate withdraws from Kempner City Council race


A candidate has withdrawn from the Kempner City Council race, leaving only one contested race for the May 1 election in the small city west of Copperas Cove.
John Clark III filed to run for Place 4 of Kempner City Council against Gerald Daniel Long on Feb. 12, the last day to file for a place on the ballot.
After some second thoughts, Clark, who is a Herald writing correspondent, told the Herald he would not have time to fulfill the duties if elected and decided to withdraw.
“Mr. John Clark III has officially been withdrawn from the May 2021 Election as of Friday, February 19th,” city secretary Hayleigh Robello said via email Wednesday. ....

Palehound and Jay Som are both known for their respective, consecutive critically-acclaimed albums and for writing some of the catchiest hooks in indie rock, so it makes perfect sense that Palehound (Ellen Kempner) and Jay Som (Melina Duterte) have joined forces for a new project, Bachelor.

The superduo released their debut single, “Anything At All,” via Polyvinyl on Thusday. It has a killer bass line and as you can expect from Kempner and Duterte, it’s catchy as hell.
This pairing has been a long time in the making. The duo actually started recording in between touring at the beginning of 2020, pre-pandemic. In the press release, the duo gave a statement on their new project: ....

No mail in Killeen for week... When will it come?


Killeen, Harker Heights and Copperas Cove residents are coming up on a full week since the last time they received mail.
The last full day of delivery in some areas was Saturday, according to post office spokeswoman Becky Hernandez.
Following the holiday weekend, many postal services across Texas were suspended in response to icy weather and power outages.
Many post offices have reported returning to full service Thursday, but no offices in Killeen, Copperas Cove or Harker Heights are among them, Hernandez said Friday.
According to the latest list released by the U.S. Postal Service, the cities within the 765 zip-code prefix which have returned to service are as follows: Bartlett, Cameron, Hamilton, HIllsboro, Kempner, Kosse, Lampasas, Moody, Mound, Nolanville, Oglesby, Pendleton, Purmela, Rockdale, Rogers, Thorndale, Thrall and Troy. ....

Filing has begun for the upcoming May election


Candidates who wish to run for Killeen city and school board elections can now file an application do so.
All four district seats for the Killeen City Council will be open for the May 1 election. Two Killeen school board seats are also up for election on the same date.
Councilmembers Debbie Nash-King and Steve Harris will be eligible to run again, but due to term limits, Shirley Fleming will not be allowed to run again. The District 3 seat will also be up for election that was previously held by Jim Kilpatrick, who died Jan. 5 after battling COVID-19.
Nash-King, Harris and Ramon Alvarez have all filed for the upcoming election, city officials confirmed Wednesday, the first day of the filing period. Harris and Nash-King have both filed for reelection and Alvarez has filed for the District 3 seat previously held by Kilpatrick. ....
